The subject lands comprise a disused granite quarry and extensive adjoining mineral bearing lands totalling approximately 11 acres in total and located at Togher, Valleymount in Co Wicklow. The site lies approximately 3km to the southeast of the village of Valleymount.
The lands have access onto the adjacent road and extractable reserves of stone have been conservatively estimated to be in excess of 5 million tonnes. The quarry and the adjacent land is underlain by ‘Wicklow Granite’ and the geological memoir/report published by the Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) and the geological map indicates that the granite is consistent throughout the site. The quarry faces in the subject land and in nearby quarries show exposures of good quality granite and the lands are considered suitable for the extraction and processing of the granite subject to the necessary planning consents and permits.
The Planning Authority for the site is Wicklow County Council. Planning Policies with respect to the site are contained within the County Development Plan.
Wicklow granite may be suitable for building/dimension stone and has been used in a number of prestigious buildings including the General Post Office and the Four Courts in Dublin, the imposing complex of Government Buildings on Upper Merrion Street, Russborough House and the Citibank offices in Dublin. The granite is also considered to be suitable for the production of monumental stone and for decorative aggregates. Over the past few years there has been a significant and increasing demand for these products.
